An independent guide to Cuttack’s Bali Yatra
Kataka Bali Jatra exists for one reason: every November, millions of people come to a riverbed in Cuttack for one of the oldest continuously observed festivals in India, and almost nobody publishes a clear, honest, properly researched guide to it.
Most of what exists online is either a two-paragraph tourism blurb that repeats the same three sentences, or a news report from a single year that stops being useful the moment the fair closes. Visitors arrive without knowing when Boita Bandana actually starts, which ground the stalls are on, where they are allowed to park, or what the festival is commemorating in the first place.
We publish the guide we wanted to read.
What we cover
Kataka Bali Jatra is a focused publication, not a general travel site. Our work sits in four areas:
- The festival itself — dates, structure, rituals, cultural programming, and how the fair actually works from dawn to closing.
- The history behind it — the maritime trade of ancient Kalinga, the Sadhaba mariners, the routes to Bali, Java and Sumatra, and the folklore that grew around departure and return.
- Cuttack — the millennium city that hosts the fair: its founding, its fort, its bazaars, and the silver filigree craft that gave it a second name.
- Practical logistics — timings, parking grounds, shuttle routes, crowd patterns, food, and what to buy from which artisan.
How we work
Festival writing has a bad habit of recycling claims until nobody remembers where they came from. We try not to do that. Our editorial approach rests on a few working rules:
We check before we publish. Dates, acreage, stall counts, parking advisories, GI-tag status and historical claims are verified against primary and official sources wherever those exist — district administration notices, Commissionerate Police advisories, ASI records, and published scholarship — rather than against other websites.
We tell you when something is disputed. Cuttack’s foundation date is genuinely contested among historians. The etymology of the Aa Ka Ma Bai chant is not settled. Some craft and culinary traditions have GI protection and others have only applied for it. Where the record is uncertain, we say so instead of picking whichever version reads better.
We date what expires. Parking plans, ground layouts, stall numbers and timings are re-issued every year by the authorities. We label anything time-sensitive as such and tell you to confirm it against the current year’s official advisory. A guide that pretends last year’s traffic plan is permanent is worse than no guide.
We correct openly. If we get something wrong, we fix it and note the change. Corrections can be sent to info@katakabalijatra.com and we read every one.

We are not affiliated with, endorsed by, or connected to the Cuttack Municipal Corporation, the Cuttack District Administration, the Commissionerate of Police (Bhubaneswar–Cuttack), ORMAS, the Department of Tourism, or the Government of Odisha. We report on the festival; we do not organise it and we cannot speak for those who do. For official dates, stall allotment, permits and traffic notifications, always go to the relevant authority directly.

This site is supported by advertising, which allows us to publish free of charge. Advertisements are served by third-party networks and are clearly distinguishable from editorial content. Advertisers have no input into what we publish, no advance sight of our articles, and no influence over our recommendations.
